What happens when you convert JPEG to PNG?

Quality

PNG stores the decoded pixels without additional lossy compression. Detail already lost in JPEG, including compression artefacts, is not restored.

Transparency

The target can store an alpha channel, but converting an opaque image does not create transparent areas. Removing a background is a separate editing step.

File size

A photographic PNG can be much larger than its JPEG source. Lossless storage retains the decoded pixel information; it is not a way to make an already compressed photograph smaller.

Is JPEG → PNG right for you?

Good choice when

  • Your application or delivery workflow requires PNG.
  • Further processing benefits from storing the decoded image without repeated lossy encoding.
  • You need a PNG-compatible workflow that can hold transparency added in a separate edit.

Probably not when

  • You expect lost JPEG detail to come back.
  • You expect automatic background removal or transparency.
  • Your main goal is a smaller photographic file.

JPEG to PNG conversion details

Compression
JPEG: Lossy → PNG: Lossless.
Quality
PNG stores the decoded pixels without additional lossy compression. Detail already lost in JPEG, including compression artefacts, is not restored.
Transparency
Transparency is replaced with white by default. Change the background in Advanced options.
Dimensions
Rendered image dimensions are retained within the converter limits; this tool does not offer resizing. Orientation handling depends on the source decoder.
Colour profile
Pixel conversion only. Original EXIF, GPS, XMP and ICC profiles are not copied; processing uses 8-bit display pixels.
Metadata
Pixel conversion only. Original EXIF, GPS, XMP and ICC profiles are not copied; processing uses 8-bit display pixels.

Common questions

Does converting JPEG to PNG improve image quality?

No. Lossless output storage avoids another lossy encoding step, but it cannot recreate missing detail or remove existing compression artefacts.

Will the background become transparent?

The target can store an alpha channel, but converting an opaque image does not create transparent areas. Removing a background is a separate editing step.

Why can the PNG be larger than the JPEG?

A photographic PNG can be much larger than its JPEG source. Lossless storage retains the decoded pixel information; it is not a way to make an already compressed photograph smaller.

Does JPEG → PNG introduce additional lossy compression?

PNG stores the decoded pixels without additional lossy compression. Detail already lost in JPEG, including compression artefacts, is not restored.
