Is HEIF → HEIC right for you?

Good choice when

HEIC fits your delivery use: Device photography & image collections.
You need a container and codec combination accepted by your application.
You can choose the source image or part needed for delivery.
Your destination supports the required animation variant.

Probably not when

You assume changing the extension ensures codec compatibility.
You require a complete collection, page set or multipart round trip.
You require animation, HDR or auxiliary alpha preservation; this native still-image path does not provide it.
You require guaranteed scene-linear values or HDR appearance.

Conversion considerations

HEIF can contain multiple image representations with different roles. These are not automatically a timed animation. Selecting an image, preserving a collection or creating several outputs needs explicit engine support; neither a first-image choice nor an all-images export is implemented.
HEIF and HEIC can represent image animation, but their frame structures are not interchangeable. Retaining motion requires sequence decoding, compositing, timing and loop mapping plus an animation-aware encoder. No such transfer is implemented; a still-only pipeline would lose the sequence.
The source can carry HDR information and HEIC has HDR-capable variants. Working radiometric values and display-referred HDR are different representations. Range, primaries, transfer function and signalling must be mapped explicitly; the future engine may instead produce SDR. HDR preservation is not promised by format support.

Compression may be lossy, lossless or uncompressed depending on its codec binding; one global quality or bit-depth value would be misleading. HEIC: HEIC commonly uses lossy HEVC; HEVC also has lossless coding tools. Actual quality, bit depth and chroma depend on the encoded profile and settings, not on the .heic extension.
